We are
gearing up for our 5th Annual
kids in the Kitchen event! The
event will be held at the Melbourne Auditorium on Saturday
March 6, 2010. This year’s KITK will feature the former
Food Network Celebrity Chef,
George Stella.
Chef
Stella is also a spokesperson for the International Junior
League’s Kids in the Kitchen and participates in KITK events
across the United States . Chef Stella was born in 1959 and
had no way of knowing that by the age of 40 he would reach the
weight of 470 pounds. Being obese, George experienced serious
heart problems that threatened his life and his career. With
his experience in the food industry George has lost more than
265 pounds and is now revolutionizing the way one eats low-carb,
and is working to inspire others. He became a best selling
author with "Livin’ Low Carb," "Family Recipes Stella Style"
and "Eating Stella Style."
We are also
offering a health fair!
Booth space is
available for you and is a great way to connect with children
and their parents interested in fighting obesity. You can
display signs and distribute flyers to help recruit new
clientele. Due to Auditorium regulations you may NOT
sell anything at the event. The booth space is free
but we request a donation for our raffles or goodie bags. (additional
information coming soon)

Purpose
The goal of the Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen initiative, which
is supported by The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. and its
member Leagues, is to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help
reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues.
Outreach and Results
Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen is a 5-year-old program in which Junior
League volunteers address the urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity and
poor nutrition. Over 240 of the 292 Junior Leagues participate in the program,
which includes free local events and hands-on activities that empower children
to adopt healthy habits with the support of their caregivers. A website,
http://www.kidsinthekitchen.org,
provides comprehensive resources for children and their parents, including an
interactive nutrition game provided by program sponsor, Cartoon Network, as well
as tips, downloadable recipes and links to information and materials from
educational partners such as the United States Department of Agriculture.
“The Junior Leagues have based our
Kids in the Kitchen program on the belief that education and hands-on
involvement are the first steps toward addressing the urgent issues surrounding
childhood obesity,” said Debbie Brown Robinson, President of AJLI. “We are
honored that this Association-wide program has been recognized for its
innovative approach and impact in communities across four countries.”
