Frequently Asked
Questions
Q: What is the Junior League of South Brevard, Inc. (JLSB)?
A: The Junior League of South Brevard, Inc. is a
non-profit organization of women committed to promoting
voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving
the community through the effective action and leadership of
trained volunteers. We are one of 292 Junior Leagues located
in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
The League’s purpose is exclusively educational and
charitable. We reach out to women of all races, religions,
and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and
commitment to voluntarism.
Q: Who belongs to the JLSB?
A: The most common characteristic shared by members is
that they are women committed to contributing to our
community. As of August 2009, the JLSB has over 165 members.
Of these, approximately 65 are actives, and 100 are sustaining
members. Sustainers have at least seven years of active
service and continue to support the League and their
community. The JLSB members are a diverse group composed of
both married and single women, many with children and many who
work fulltime, part-time or are currently stay at home moms.
Q: Why should I join the JLSB?
A: Membership in the Junior League of South Brevard,
Inc. provides many benefits. The most significant is the
personal satisfaction that comes from making a positive
contribution to your community. The Junior League empowers
women through leadership training and developing action in the
South Brevard community, all while building relationships with
a diverse group of dedicated, talented women. You will learn
about the South Brevard community and how to collaborate with
other organizations to achieve a common goal. As a member,
you will receive training and can sharpen your skills in areas
such as public speaking, public relations, budgeting,
facilitation, team building, fundraising, advocacy, volunteer
coordination, and program development. Should you move out of
the area, you can transfer your membership to another Junior
League.
Q: Isn’t the Junior League really just a social organization?
A: No. The Junior League of South Brevard, Inc.
strives to fulfill our mission statement, while focusing on
projects supporting our charitable endeavors. The social
element is one of the many benefits of a League membership,
but it is not our primary purpose. Our Membership Enhancement
Committee schedules a variety of social events throughout the
year that are optional to members.
Q: How much time will I devote to the JLSB?
A: We are an organization that promotes volunteerism;
therefore, each of our active members volunteer in the
community or on a committee for approximately 20-50 hours each
year. There is also a six hour service shift (or two
three-hour shifts) that we complete within one of our
fundraising projects, currently at the Festival of Trees in
November.
Q: Will I attend meetings?
A: As in most membership organizations, the Junior
League of South Brevard, Inc. holds monthly meetings to
conduct Junior League business and announce exciting events
that are happening in the coming weeks and months. At most
meetings, we invite a guest speaker to address the members
about a current topic such as health, personal growth or
financial issues or we may have a member from one of our
community partnerships speak about their agency or current
projects. We hold seven General Membership Meetings per year
and ask that you attend at least 5 of the 7. First year
members also attend two training sessions held in September
and October to learn about the JLSB history, volunteer and
leadership development opportunities we offer, and the many
ways we are able to serve our community. Members are also
invited to attend the Provisional Installation in December and
the Officer Installation in May.
Q: What will my financial obligation be?
A: Members of the Junior League of South Brevard, Inc.
pay annual dues of $125. Provisional Members pay an
additional $25 for the Provisional Class Training Program so
the total amount due for the Provisional Program is $150.
Members are encouraged to buy tickets for the Gala at Festival
of Trees and contribute donations to the Done in Your Seat
Projects at our General Meetings where we collect a few
dollars or donated items from each member to support a local
agency or project.
Q: How do I find out more about the JLSB?
A:
We invite you to attend one of our New Member Orientation
Socials held in August or early September. Designed
specifically for prospective members, it is a wonderful
opportunity to get to know the JLSB - who we are, what we do,
and the many ways we have impacted and continue to impact the
South Brevard community. Membership packets will be
available, and you will have the opportunity to complete the
paperwork, if desired. If you are unable to make one of these
events, please contact the Membership Development Chair at
membership@jlsb.net
to find out more information about becoming a member. We
also encourage you to visit the Association of Junior Leagues
International, Inc. website at
www.ajli.com
to learn more about the history and benefits of membership.
Q: When can I join the JLSB?
A:
Even though our Provisional Membership Program runs from
August through December, we collect contact information for
prospective members continuously throughout the year.
However, in order to plan and prepare for each new class of
provisional members, we can only accept new members through
the middle of September.
Q: Do I need a sponsor to join the JLSB?
A:
No. The Junior League of South Brevard, Inc. welcomes all
women 21 years of age and older who are committed to
voluntarism and does not require a new member to be sponsored. |
