Current Projects

Healthy Start Coalition of Brevard

The Junior League of South Brevard and Healthy Start Coalition of Brevard are teaming up to provide new parents with tools to aid infant health and family bonding. We will provide all new parents of babies born in South Brevard hospitals a "birthday gift" that will include a baby book to promote bonding, a new parent newsletter with important infant care tips, and a guide to web based information, as well as a newborn care booklet. This program was developed to provide new parents with the basic tools they need to make better informed health and development decisions for their infant particularly in the areas of bonding, screening and infant care. JLSB is funding this program for almost $40,000.00 over three years.

Children's Home Society of Florida (Brevard Division)

JLSB is working with the Brevard Division of Children's Home Society of Florida's Healthy Start Program . The Healthy Start Program's primary goal is to decrease infant mortality in Brevard county. This program will provide access to quality health care and counseling for both women and infants. We will be funding the professional services of lactation counselors, psychosocial counseling, and nutritional counseling. We will also be providing money to purchase necessary supplies for pregnant women and infants such as prenatal vitamins and new baby care needs. Twice a year the Junior League will host "birth" day parties, aka baby showers, to celebrate the births in southern Brevard County and provide support to new mothers that are enrolled in this program. We are funding this program for $100,000.00 over three years.

Mini-Grants

JLSB awards about 10 mini-grants per year of up to $1,000.00 each year to South Brevard community non-profit organizations. Recipients for 2006 are Brevard Cultural Alliance for the Artist in Residence program, Brevard Museum of Art and Science to assist in offering free educational programs, Brevard Neighborhood Development Coalition for a summer mentoring program, Brevard Zoo to build a conservation kiosk, Genesis House for G.E.D. tutoring and testing, Healthy Families Brevard to provide safety items for families with small children, Rolling Readers Space Coast to help provide a literacy program in a South Brevard school, Space Coast Early Intervention Center to purchase critically needed computer hardware, and The Women's Center for the vocational training program.
